Having watched Rabun, Sepet, and Gubra, I guess I am a little Yasmin Ahmad fan. This film was screened at the usual impossible venues, like Vivo Europa ($10 per ticket), Sun Plaza, and Causeway Point. Therefore I had no choice but to take trusted bus 980 from my place to Sembawang Plaza. I havent travelled up Upper Thomson Road and Sembawang Road for a while, and it was a nice ride, passing by majestic trees and old roads, my BMT camp that was Nee Soon Camp, Sembawang Shopping Centre where I used to go to Sembawang Music Centre to buy those cds that came in long boxes, and finally the new Sembawang Bus Interchange.
It was a 4 or 5pm screening, and I got my good friend Anand to watch the film with me. We were the only two audience in the house. Yep, two. I remember a long long time ago, when there were only two audience in the house, the usher would actually come to us and told that there will not be a screening, and offer us tickets to another screening at another time ... guess they don't worry about overheads too much nowadays. Anyway, since we had the entire cinema to ourselves, Anand and I sat seperate ends of the row, and be basically chatted between us for the whole film. Talk about having your own humongous entertainment system ...
About the film. It was a joy, pure little joy. Having followed her last few films, this was a cumulation , stabilization, of an artiste. Everything that was shaky, or uncertain, in the previous movies, now seemed so assuring, so confident, so steady ... a little master at work already. My only worry is ... where can she go from here? I am not sure it is so good to continue making Orkid movies (although she is a cutie ...) running from KL and town and kampong, about lost love, strong family ties, religious and social sensitivities ... but whatever she do, I will still go and support lah. Yasmin said that she cannot be a full time film maker, as the industry cannot support full timers, hence she only has enough for one film per year, which is just about right for the rest of us ...
Now, if only I can find a copy of the Rabun VCD somewhere ...
