Half Nelson was an incredible debut film for many. The two stars, Ryan Gosling and
Shareeka Epps, were phenomenon. I thought perhaps we might not have a film like this on our shore, maybe 10 years ago, with its theme of the teacher taking drugs ... hardly soul inspiring stuff. This is hardly an easy film to stomach and watch, what with watching the protagonist going through his daily routine, trying to make sense of his life and his work, one hand trying to inspire his students with some unorthodox teaching, and the other hand coping with family, friends, ex-lover, neighbours, etc. The film looks raw and edgy, which helped to compound the tiredness and exasperation that these characters feel, living in the neighbourhood that they do. This film is worth the
accolades that it received.
