The other day, as I was waiting for my friend at Lido, I chanced upon the giant poster of Confessions of Pain. You know, the one with the mug shots of the four leads. Now, I just watched Happy Birthday, and I thought, wouldn't it be funny if these two movies, switched their English titles. Cos, the Rene Liu and Louis Khoo film, was a lot of confession, a lot of pain; as for the film about the other four, well, it felt like someone just sang the Happy Birthday song to you, after watching the movie ...
Someone told me some time ago, when you are overseas, and you saw something bad, something awkward, something idiotic happens, and someone sang the Happy Birthday song, that person is a Singaporean. Think about it, who else can be so enterprising as to twist thou holy song, the song that we, by right, only get sung from friends and well-wishers, once a year? But oh no, here in Temasek land, when you get into trouble, people really wish you well when they sing the Happy Birthday song to you. Really.
So what about the movie? Frankly, I dunno. It is just that, such movies are so rare from Hong Kong, they must be pretty good. Rene Liu is my (film) idol. Louis Kho, strange as it seems, as he was often type-cast, doesn't look half as bad either. The film is strangely, undramatic. There are very few outburst moments; a lot of it was washed away in the poetry of things to come and go.
I think singing the song would had been more exciting.
