Surely a candidate for one of my fav films of the year, coming so early in the year, together with The Queen. I can see why this film was deemed unfilmable, but, I dare say, by the end of the film, one could almost smell ... There was a certain belief that Tom Tykwer just might be the right director to helm this film (since in my opinion, Peter Greenaway would be ideal, but he is nowhere to be found ...) after his phenomenal film, Run Lola Run, still impactful after its release in '98. The film was a visual galore, swinging wildly between the grotesque and the angelic, images. Certainly, having Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman in the film lent a lot of weight, although I would prefer Mr Hoffman's role to be a little less comic, but the film surely belongs to the young talent of BenWhishaw, who might still be considered a little too good looking for the part, but definitely has the creepy looks and feel for it. Other than Rachel Hurd Wood, there is also ... Karoline Herfurth, the unforgetable Plum Girl. Plums never look so good in her hands, and under her knife ... This is one of those films that needed to be watched on the big screen, believe me, much will be lost in vcd or dvd.
