Biennale @ NMS. My final "paying" venue for the Biennale. There were also some interesting exhibits there. Makoto Aida - Harakiri School Girls, 2006. It looks like any manga comic, but at closer scrutiny, it is a terrifying drawing of school girls performing Harikiri. A colourful and vibrant illustration of blood and entrails, this is very dark humour indeed. Mariko Mori - Tom Na H-iu, 2006. This condom-like looking sculpture can glow in the dark, and the uneven light reminds of an alien pod. The fact that this exhibit occupies a large and dark room, and the physical distance that seperates the exhibit and audience, certainly adds to this eerie feeling. Carsten Nicolai - syn chron, 2005. It looks like a space-age structure, but is actually a humongous light and audio installation. One can enter the installation, lie down, soak into the laser lights and beeping sounds, and zzz ... Innigo Manglano-Ovalle - Iceberg (r11i01), 2006. A replica of an actual iceberg, made of aircraft aluminium tubes and plastic joints, standing under the magnificant structure, one can imagine the amazing wonder of the world, that is a huge iceberg, and thinking of how a few steel cables can support such a huge structure ... How did the artiste construct, let alone, transport, this exhibit in the first place?
My Summer of Love. This looks like a pretty straight-forward coming of age film. Throw in two leads of opposite characteristics, and watch how tantrums and sparks fly. Throw in a brother who is a reborn Christian, whose incessant preaching drives the sister up the wall. The big drawback is the ending, which was abrupt, and doesn't seem to change anything that started from the beginning ... Guess the greatest charm of the film would be the details, and the slow and patient buildup of the two girls' friendship. Other than that, a big yawn ...
