Subtext II. A labour of love between a group of dancers, among whom are Susan and Feng Zhen. I went to watch the first installation last year at the Play Den, while this year's effort is at Utterly Art, a small art gallery situated on the second level of a shophouse along South Bridge Road. The noise from the traffic outside at the main road, and the shophouse neon lights from across Chinatown, did not deter the quality of the performance, but instead lend a nice backdrop of sounds and lighting effect. It was indeed tough to squeeze 35 people in the intimate space, anymore people around my size, and the dancers' space would be seriously compromised. Despite all the inconveniences, the dancers did put up a strong performance. I hope they can continue to develop such an interesting and experimental project.
The Professor and His Beloved Equation. This is my first choice for the Jap Film Fest. One reason. Letter from the Mountain, one of my favourite Jap film of all time. This film does not disappoint much. The premise is a little ludiculous, one Math lesson all on the teacher's love for his mentor, and mathematics, interspersed with interesting maths equations, facts and trivia. The main thrust of the film, between the friendship of the teacher, his mentor the professor, and the mentor, was much more interesting and fun. Of course it was very hard to believe, due to the peculiar disease that the professor was suffering, that the teacher and his mother managed to maintain their friendship and love for the professor for so long, but we forgive all these. The film was filled with many wonderful and heartwarming moments of brilliance. I need to get this dvd, as well as the previous mentioned film, asap.
An Inconvenient Truth. We grabbed the chance to watch the film at a discounted rate, some kind hearted soul decided to partial-sponsor this screening. As the documentary the film was average, as a powerpoint presentation it would be considered a very good and convincing one. Then again, Al Gore has done this for a thousand times, so I guess it would have been very slick by the time the documentary was made. The one main point that got us pondering however, was, what would had happened to the US, and the rest of the world, if Al Gore had been president, instead of GB ... would he had dared to tackle the big commercial corporations, with their wasteful ways of using the Earth's resources, thus causing thousands of jobs; or would he still toe the line, and find other means of keeping himself occupied during the term of office? Surely he won't be such a fervour warmonger ... but that is pure speculation lah.
