Email to Chang Kang, lead singer of Typewriter, (one of the) best local band in Singapore!
======================================================
Dear brother,
Can forward to Akiko? Thanks. Lost contacts due to computer transition. The usual lah.
Went to watch this film this morning, alone. Doubt if there are any like-minded people wanting to watch this film on a working day morning, so did not bother asking anyone. There were only three audience in the cinema. Yeah, good old days of watching arthouse films.
It helped a lot that we watched Miranda July's shorts last month, in July, hah hah. It kind of prepared me to know what to expect from her feature film. Compare to the shorts, the film was very accomplished, very professionally done, the sound was mostly quite clear too. Guess there was quite a little budget behind this. Sundance money?
The characters, to me, borders along whether you like them all or hate them all. Some may complain about what's wrong with these Americans having such quirky characteristics, facing problems of family, friendship, growing up, sexuality, avant garde art, etc. I think these are what makes them interesting, to me anyway. So they don't have superpowers, or a unique remote control, or fast cars, but I think because of that, we can emphatise them a little better than we can shed tears for a Captain Jack Sparrow. Right?
They are going to show Singapore Dreaming soon. The poster has the family hugging each other, against the backdrop of our HDB flats. At least they show our HDB flats. The Spore Tourism Board sponsored Krrish ... did not show even one block of flat (but I did enjoy the film anyway.) I ask myself what would a foreign audience think of us should this film be screened overseas. Should our national obsession with the 5, or 6, Cs, not be quirky to them as well? This harks back to one thought that came out of watching Jonathan's Homesick under the Singapore Theatre Festival. Watching the play, you begin to see or ask ourselves, why do we sometimes complain about our country and ourselves so much?
Think I talk out of track already. Anyway, Akiko, thanks for the recommendation. Would tell my friends to all go catch it. We all know that it would last in Orchard Cineleisure for no more than two weeks ...
Till the next Typewriter gig, or film screening.
Regards,
Kiat
