Crab Shack. Had dinner at this little end-corner stall in a coffee shop at the Sin Ming - Upper Thomson area. My friend and I ordered a 2-piece meal, which comes with 2 flower crabs, and fries, and also ordered baked rice. The crabs were smaller than I expected, but what do I know about crabs. They were mildly sweet, I guess whatever spices the owners added was put in sparingly, but I love the taste anyway. The baked crab rice was pretty good, but I thought it might be too cheesy. Beyond that, don't expect ambient setting, don't think of Long Beach Seafood, this is just a humble stall trying to carve out a little business. The coffee shop is old house, so no air-conditioning, no state-of-the-art toilets, and not even high seats for toddlers. It was fun watching the young ones struggling with the crabs, and how their exasperated parents try to cope feeding them and themselves, for we all know how messy eating crabs can be. Well, hope the business survive then.
Train Man. Caught this new Japanese drama series on channel 56 on SCV. Train Man is about this ordinary Japanese man trying to woo this gorgeous lady, with the help of his numerous net "friends." Apparently this was a true story, and it spawned a successful book, comic, movie, drama series, etc. I thought the antics of the first series was a little crude, what with putting down the man to his lowest point, such that he was contemplating suicide on the night of his birthday, as well as on the other hand, elevating the lady to such grace and charm that it would seem impossible that the two would match and find love ... but we all know how the ending would be like. I thought what was interesting about this story was the motley crew of net "friends" that were behind him. They were from all walks of life, and they all have different views of what the man should do to woo his infatuation, and they all have their own problems. I thought what would be interesting, as the series unfolds, would be to see how their own lives change as this love story evolves. Who knows, I might want to pick up the book, or the drama series, myself one day.
The Take. Watched the film with Melissa at Alliance Francaise. I guess with a little more publicity, the film might actually stand a chance of selling out, then our friends, Grant and Anand, won't be able to watch it. The audience was pretty wide-ranging, hence the slogan, under the radar, was pretty appropriate I guess. The documentary was alright, the film was pretty clear of what it was trying to achieve, although it was not clear what the film makers' agenda was. I thought that the film made me appreciate, just a little more, our economic state of things in this island, where there is low unemployment. Goes to show that we should appreciate our jobs, cos there are many people out there who don't have one, and have to worry day and night when their next meal is going to come from ... The IMF was featured quite prominently in the film, this makes us wonder about the upcoming conference, whereby the security is going to be supertight. We know for sure that there is absolutely no chance of a repeat of Seattle ... It would be pretty difficult to manoeuvre around Suntec area come next month, so time to make plans elsewhere ...
