Before I ramble about another film ... yes, mom, I'm sorry I watched another film. It's been only 4 days after SIFF and I had already watched 3 films ... let me talk about my favourite man now. James Gomez? No. Wayne Rooney? No ... He is actually Mr No Reservations, Mr Cook's Tour, Mr Anthony Bourdain. I am currently busy thumbing through his Kitchen Confidential & A Cook's Tour now. I also follow a forum under Discovery Travel and Living, that talks about the 40ish New Yorker's programme. People from all over the world chip in to say what they feel about the man. As for me, well, the reason why I like to watch him is his unassuming, no-nonsense, almost honest approach to presenting his food and travel programmes. He is not afraid to provoke others, and laugh at himself, which makes the programmes pretty endearing. I look forward to his programmes every Wednesday night and some other weird timings, which says a lot about me I guess.
Back to the real me. Mirrormask is good for the whole family, hah hah. I guess children will enjoy the graphics and animation and puppetry, and adults who don't follow Gaiman will smash their heads against the seat in front of them. If I don't try too hard, I would say that the plot is not too hard to follow, but plot, nor acting, is not the main thing about this film. As for whether this is a worthy film for fans, I don't know and I don't care. What I feel is that given the kind of mainstream stuff that we mostly get, this film is a welcoming relief. I guess most non-fans spend most of the film admiring the different techniques of film making, and sometimes trying to make sense of where the film is going, but I must say that the film is a great testimony of the genius that is Neil Gaiman. Oh, as well as Henson puppetry, again. Certainly a welcome alternative to the possibilities of film making.
