Watched two Jap films today, back to back. It is very interesting because both attracts vastly different audience. Although I spotted many friends heading for both screenings ...
Nitaboh - such a proper, educational, uplifting, encouraging, inspiring, etc film. No wonder half of the local Japanese community was there. Should be circulated in local Jap schools. Music was great and exciting, whether the shamisen, or the orchestra playing. It was good to be learning a little about traditional Japanese music. This film really reminds me of Sopyonje. Both protagonists were blind, both were trying to master very traditional musical forms, and both had to suffer great hardships to attain the pinnacle in their music. I detected several audience crying, pretty early into the screening, so it was a really moving experience. It was also great that the director was around, lends credibility to the screening.
Sachiko Hanai - What can we say? What a lovely porno film, masquerading as art film, with anti-war, anti-bush sentiments. Had expected more audience to walk out actually ... In the old days this would had been a midnight screening, whereby you would get about 100 audience, but since this was Saturday 7pm, so there was quite a good turn out. I bet more than half the audience did not expect the film to be so ... B-grade, and pornographic ... not that guys like me mind. Hah hah hah. Most of the actors were amateurs, including the leads, so the acting, outside the sex scenes, were really bad. Only the delivery guy was actually a recognisable actor, but I guess he was just there to play a really short cameo.
Been pretty happy with my films so far. Hope tomorrow's Adam's Apple and Saratan, are good too. Pity I will be watching these films alone, sigh ...
