I wanted to find out why The Smiths and Morrissey are so hot and influential, in the end I fell asleep at some points of the documentary, not a good sign ... Is It Really So Strange attempted to find out why a group of Latino and Hispanic young people in East LA are crazy and fanatic over Morrissey ... Some answers could be detected, meaning, they were mostly, the lost, the unloved and most importantly, the outcast or the outsider ... Since Morrissey is an Irish living in UK, and the Latino and Hispanic feel like second-class citizens in US ...Yes, I did enjoy the hair-copying bit, whereby even the director did so to bring himself closer to the subjects; the tattoo over the autograph was quite cool, and obviously very devotional then; and the part discussing whether he was asexual, by trying to read between the lines of the lyrics. The later part of the docu about the interview with the man himself did keep me awoke, so that was good, but ... I was hoping to hear some, perhaps, academic / professional explanations of why this particular group of people were so wild about the group and the man ... It was just that at the end, I still did not have a better picture of why THESE fans lah, I mean, it could had been a film about Koreans or Thais or even Singaporeans ...
