Another two films tonight. Was pouring chickens and ducks in the afternoon but fortunately the weather cooled in the evening. Fearless Freaks had a 70% attendance in Alliance Francaise, which is not too bad, considering that the Flaming Lips is not such a hot-shot rock band. In the end I thought the really messy style of scribblings and animation in between the interviews and shots really suited the documentary, since the director was supposed to know the group well ... Luckily I know some of the bands they namechecked, such as Jane's Addiction, the Butthole Surfers, Mercury Rev, etc. The scene with Steven talking, and doing his cocaine at the same time, was really poignant, and scary, because he was really walking a thin line then, staring at death in the eye as he looked so weak and frail during the interview, but fortunately he kicked the habit in the end. Nice documentary, but strictly for fans.
Burnt Theatre. Aiyoh ... I already had reservations because of S-21, but I thought I'd give the director another chance, since this is also about theatre, but ... aiyoh ... what did the director want to show us in this film? I was quite loss indeed. There was plenty of social commentary, of course, which was great. There was also all kinds of performing arts and entertainment that you could possibly imagine of, which was great to watch but there was no value in them combined. There were even two, or three, drama rehearsals, which does not lead to anything. At the end I still do not know what was going to happen to the theatre ... aiyoh ... I definitely would not be catching this director's future films soon ...
