Monday morning, don't feel like working man ... Let's talk about yesterday's Sunday Live!, about the new Cathay, and about suburban shopping malls ...
Went to watch RENT last Friday night. The cinemas are on level 5 and 6, and it seems like everything below that is not opened for business yet, I think. I wonder why they are in a hurry to open the cinema then ... There is not even 7-11. The bottle of mineral water I bought for my friend cost $2.20 ... sheesh ... Picturehouse films cost $10, and there are plenty of complaints about the hard seats, the no food and drinks policy, LOUD SOUND SYSTEMS, etc ... Well I guess new things need time to make adjustments lah ... I wonder aloud how the Cathay will compete with Plaza Sing. I mean, one, MRT; two, layout; three, lack of outdoor spaces ... unless they really really emphasise the movie movie part of the building lah, but then again, the Orchard Cineleisure side is also doing this what ... I do want this place to do well, if nothing, they will be showing films that are closer to my tastes, although I have not caught any of the opening films, but since they will be opening in normal screenings, no hurry then.
About shopping malls. Hmmm, it is true, unlike most cosmopolitan cities, we don't have club, pub, cafe, nightclub, etc cultures to speak of. So, where is a family of four, or six, gonna spend time in, in the weekend? Where are students gonna hang out after school? Where are couples gonna go after work?
By the way, homes are not an option since, one, we live with our parents, two, our homes are not big enough to cram more than four friends at a time ...
So, bo bian lah, off we go to the most humble shopping malls, where 90% of the shops are the same as elsewhere, but we still go because we can shop, watch movies, hang out in starbucks, etc, all the wonderful things we can do on weekends ... we really can't think of better things to do eh?
Even the MacRitchie tree-top walk near my place, I don't go on the weekends, because there is a long queue. Can you imagine, queue to walk on a bridge to see nature? Only in Singapore, so sad right ...
But I don't hate malls. This is the closest we get to gel with our fellow Singaporeans. I mean, when the upcoming political rallies come to town in a few months time, lets have them staged in Junction 8 or Tampines Mall. You are guaranteed a crowd, there is air-conditioning, so why not? Since we are no longer as close to our relatives and neighbours, lets hang out at malls and pretend we are still one people, before going back to our lonely shells at night, preparing for the next day's grind at work.
See you at your friendly shopping mall this weekend.
