Went to watch, or rather, support, Lamentation for Uncle Song by George Chua. Truth to be told, I, as well as most of the audience, have no idea what his work is about. Truth to be told as well, we are a bunch of strange audience who enjoy supporting George time and time again. It is as if his show had a sublimal effect on us, that attracts us to visit again and again ... but seriously, I enjoy George's performance, not so much the content per say, as heaven knows that beautiful music is ... strictly a personal thing, but really because we see an artiste's work-in-progress, on how he develops and hones his craft, on how every show is a slightly different approach to his music, his use of props, his collaboration of artistes of different medium, slowly but surely witnessing the maturing of an individual. This I think is a precious gift, which you don't often see with a lot of artistes, or groups, who are mostly hampered by trivial things like budget ... A brave artiste is one who is not afraid to make his audience sweat over his craft, who challenges convention, who takes the gamble to venture into the unknown, not knowing what the results will be, but nevertheless emerging much the wiser ... looking forward to his next show. Good luck!
