I had the luxury of watching two great movies on Monday. I like watching movies on Monday, not only are there less crowd, but I get a kick from knowing that while most of my peers are working their asses off, I am kicking my sandals and munching popcorn away at some quiet corner of town. Evil ... I should be stoned to death soon ...
Capote. A one-man movie. Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He steals the show wherever he appears on the big screen. I remembered him on Boogie Nights (very perverted), Next Stop Wonderland, The Big Lebowski, Happiness (very perverted again), Patch Adams, Magnolia, The Talented Mr Ripley, Almost Famous (really funny there), Punch Drunk Love, etc. Finally the man is catapulted to the A-list with this film. He fully deserves the gold statue for his calculative, two-faced role as Truman Capote. Throughout the movie I keep shifting my alliance towards Capote, whether to like or despise this writer, whether he was being a friend, or just milking stories for his infamous book ... I guess it helps that he is not good looking, so doesn't have to go through the trouble of making himself up to earn credibility ...
I should catch Transamerica soon as well ...
V for Vendetta, for whom Natalie Portman shaved her head, and we never get to see Hugo Weaving's face ... Since I have not read the comics, I would like to say that I enjoyed the film. I think this comic adaptation captured the fine line between fun (as in comics should be fun, or funny) and film-making credibility (commercial or artistic). Not many comics pass the grade of being good and fun, it is generally more of the former than later ... although the Fantastic Four, and X-Men did restore some parity ... I think the director did a decent job in portraying the totalitarian regime's terror, and while the acting was not too much to crow about, the plot was riveting enough to plough on ... I think that discrediting the film over its perceived encouragement of terrorism is foolish and ridiculous, and obviously whoever had such notions did not watch the film, nor read the book, carefully ...
Saw the shots for X-Men III. Should I bother? Did not watch the second installation, and now this one no Bryan Singer as well ...
