Watched Polar Express with a friend yesterday afternoon.
I asked another friend later, whether the creators of this animation are the same as those who did
Final Fantasy a few years back ... No. Well, it looked like the
same technology to me, with the reflection on the faces, the uncannily real hair, the movements ... I don't think technology has improved in that department ...
But the eyes ... they look hollow, they look lifeless, they look, well, eerie ... You know, the rest of the body looks wonderfully realistic, but the eyes gave it away ... This is what happens when technology moves unevenly, and we are all pulled along with the ride ... I sometimes don't understand why animation technology has to move towards realism. It feels so ... hollywood. You know ...
And the other strange thing. For a film that is watched by more children than adults, the cinema was strangely ... sedated. I was so happy that I could concentrate on the film without crying babies and bratty kids around me, that I failed to notice the irony until I left the cinema ... this is a coup, man. When did they learn to make films that keep children quiet in their seats ... when did they learn to make cartoons that are ... not funny?
I did not say this is a bad film. It just didn't move me.
I still love Tom Hanks nevertheless.
